# Balancing strength and flexibility in metal pressed medical components

Posted by Advanex Medical  |   29 October, 2026

Balancing strength and flexibility in metal pressed medical components means identifying which property a part's function depends on most, then combining material choice, heat treatment and geometry so that it doesn't have to sacrifice the other. Traditionally, a stronger pressing has been a less flexible and less formable one. Precipitation-hardening stainless steels, age-hardenable copper alloys and superelastic nickel-titanium have made that trade-off far less stark, but choosing between them still demands careful design.

## What do strength and flexibility mean for a metal pressing?

In a metal pressing, strength is the ability to resist permanent deformation under load, while flexibility is the ability to deflect and spring back to shape. Both are governed by the material's yield strength and elastic modulus: the higher the yield strength relative to stiffness, the further a component can flex without taking a permanent set.

Engineers also need to consider a third property, formability: how much the material can be bent and drawn in the press tool without cracking. A spring arm in an autoinjector or inhaler often needs all three.

## Why do strength and flexibility pull against each other?

Strength and flexibility pull against each other because the cold working that strengthens most metals also uses up their ductility. Harder tempers resist load better but crack more easily in tight forms, a trade-off explored in our article on designing metal pressings for thinness, strength and precision.

Conventional stainless steel also offers a limited elastic range. According to Duerig, Pelton and colleagues, stainless steel recovers only around 0.5% strain before permanently deforming, which restricts how far a pressed stainless spring arm can safely flex.

## How do newer materials ease the trade-off?

Newer materials ease the trade-off by separating forming from strengthening, or by offering far greater elastic recovery than conventional alloys.

| **Material** | **How it balances the trade-off** | **Key consideration** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 17-7 PH stainless steel | Formed in Condition C, then heat treated to raise strength | Dimensional chance during heat treatment must be planned for |
| Copper beryllium | Formed soft, then age hardened to full strength | Beryllium content requires regulatory justification |
| Nitinol (nickel-titanium) | Superelastic recovery far beyond stainless steel | Specialist forming and shape-setting required |

For 17-7 PH, [Gibbs Interwire data](https://www.gibbswire.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gibbs-Datasheet-Strip-1-Type-17-7-Chrome.pdf) shows minimum tensile strength rising from 200,000 psi in Condition C to 240,000 psi after one hour at 900°F. Copper beryllium works the same way: [Materion](https://www.materion.com/insights/blog/selecting-cube-temper) notes thatd age-hardenable tempers are formed first and heat treated afterwards, while pre-hardened "mill hardened" tempers are limited to flat or nearly flat parts. Nitinol, meanwhile, can recover up to 11% strain, around 20 times more than stainless steel.

## How can geometry help balance strength and flexibility?

Geometry is often the most powerful lever, because the bending stiffness of a flat pressed section rises with the cube of its thickness. Halving the thickness of a spring arm cuts its stiffness to an eighth and halves the bending stress for a given deflection. Engineers can tune strength and flexibility by:

- Adjusting arm length, width and thickness to set spring force and stress
- Adding ribs, flanges or embossing where stiffness is needed
- Using generous fillet radii to avoid stress concentrations that shorten fatigue life
- Orienting flexing features across the rolling direction of the strip

Precise, consistent tooling then ensures that these features, and the force they deliver, stay uniform from part to part, [which is critical in medical assembly lines.](https://blog.advanexmedical.com/how-to-ensure-uniformity-across-metal-pressings-in-medical-assembly-lines)

## Does material choice affect medical device compliance?

Yes. The material that best balances strength and flexibility must also be acceptable for the device's regulatory pathway. Copper beryllium alloys contain up to 2% beryllium and are [classified as Carc. 1B](https://www.matthey.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/downloads/MaterialSafetyDatasheets/MSDS_CuBe2-Alloys_v26.pdf) under the EU CLP Regulation. [Under Annex I, Section 10.4 of the EU MDR](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/eur/2017/745/annex/I/adopted?timeline=false), invasive devices, devices in contact with the body and those that administer medicines may only contain such substances above 0.1% w/w where specifically justified. For many drug delivery devices, that makes 17-7 PH or other stainless grades the simpler choice.

## Getting the balance right from the start

Balancing strength and flexibility in metal pressed medical components is rarely a single decision. Material, heat treatment, geometry and compliance are best resolved together at the design stage.

Advanex Medical helps OEMs make these decisions early, [industrialising metal pressings](https://www.advanexmedical.com/solutions/metal-pressings-and-stampings/) in spring and stainless steels, copper and nickel alloys and titanium, produced in ISO-accredited cleanrooms for high-volume medical device manufacturing.
